A Classic Italian Comfort Food: Bolognese Meatballs

Bolognese meatballs are a beloved Italian dish that is both comforting and flavorful. These juicy and savory meatballs, traditionally served with a rich tomato sauce, are perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Instructions:

Prepare the Meatballs:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix well with your hands until everything is evenly combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs:

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet.
  2. Carefully add the meatballs to the skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
  3. Cook the meatballs for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until browned.
  4. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.

Make the Sauce:

  1. Add the remaining olive oil to the skillet.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more, until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, sugar, salt, pepper, basil, and parsley.
  5. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the meatballs back to the skillet and simmer for 15 minutes more, or until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Serve:

  1. Serve the Bolognese meatballs over spaghetti, fettuccine, or your favorite pasta.
  2. Garnish with additional grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, substitute some of the ground beef with ground veal.
  • You can use store-bought marinara sauce instead of making your own.
  • If you want a spicier sauce, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • To make ahead, assemble the meatballs and store them in the refrigerator until ready to cook.
  • The sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Enjoy your delicious Bolognese meatballs!
